In the biological sense, an animal, or human is a person who has matured. In the context of humans an adult's term has significance that is shaped by moral and social concepts. As opposed to a "non-adult" or "minor", a legal adult has attained the age of majority. They are considered autonomous, self-sufficient and dependable. The word "major" can be applied to them. The general consensus is that the age at which a person can legally become an adult is 18. But, it can vary depending on legal rights and country as well as psychological development.

Adulthood refers to the period in the human lifespan when a person has reached full maturation in both physical and mental development. The typical age for adulthood is the age of 21, or 20. Following middle age (starting around age 40) then comes older age (around age 60). The adulthood process is split into three stages: young adulthood (18-mid-30s), mid-30s-mid-60s, and the final stage of adulthood, mid-60s to death. In the early years of adulthood, our body has reached its full physical maturity. Yet, our height and our weight can grow. The physical abilities of our bodies are at their peak in young adulthood. This is reflected in muscle strength, reflex time, senses, and heart functioning.
